On the Texas Plains Trail... Museum #10

Museum of the Llano Estacado
Wayland Baptist University
Plainview, Texas

The Museum of the Llano Estacado is a small museum with various exhibits centered on the Llano Estacado area.  As we began the self guided tour the first displays are of very successful individuals who came from Plainview, such as a Miss Texas, a movie star, Jimmy Dean (yes, the sausage man), and an opera singer.  Around the corner begins the exhibits of the Llano Estacado, starting with the Indians living in the area.  Not a lot of information is included in the actual exhibits so when we asked for a brochure the front hostess gave us what looked like a packet of papers that a tour guide would use that explained every display.  It was wonderful to use!  I was really appreciative that we had it because otherwise I'm not really sure how we would know the purpose of some the exhibits.  The museum ended with a large water well digger and an explanation of the importance of irrigation in the area of the Llano Estacado.  I enjoyed the full to life displays of an Indian campground, a windmill and the water well digger as well as time period furnished rooms.  The museum itself is very well laid out and very eye appealing and the kids enjoyed it a lot.
